In this photo of 7/8 December in Rovaniemi there is nothing that we haven't seen before. But ordinary lamp halos are quite well developed, like the subanthelic arc that loops all the way to subanthelic point.
Merry Christmas to all.
Gorgeous as ever. The subanthelic arc is otherworldly. One can almost start to imagine seeing some colors in parts of it...
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to all!
Wow, now that's something ... too bad we can't see something like this in Czech Republic.
ReplyDeleteTry to find a snowgun, Matej! Then (especially with a lamp) you have better chances to see a good diamond dust display! And of course one more key to success is the stamina, patience and devotion Marko has.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's another treasure of the 7/8 December monster-display!
For diamond dust you just need a "halogun"
ReplyDeleteand of cource kaoline. Its very easy to build necessary equipment to make own displays. Then you can make halos where you want.
Matej, any of those good diamond dust displays that were seen in Czech last winter would have made a great lamp display. So, just get yourself a lamp and get yourself near snowguns - the season should be just starting in Czech.
ReplyDeleteOr follow Mikkilä's advice to built your own halo gun, which is the future. But for that you need to have a peaceful place where to experiment freely. You don't do it from the apartments building balcony.
Jari, I have been trying to figure out whether the apparent blue color at the subanthelic arc intensity drop is real or not. Enhancing the blue saturation affects first this area and only after that are other areas affected, like rest of the faint parts or subanthelic arc or parhelic circle.
ReplyDeleteSo I think it is real.
But I don't recall seeing it in simulations. Maybe burning overnight with the finest quality would bring it up.
No joke I can see a little blue
ReplyDeleteMaybe it will be a good idea to create some kind of report (for example in .pdf) to sum up all of the phenomena of 7/8 December in Rovaniemi.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, this display is worthy of several scientific papers which I'm sure Marko is in process of preparing at some point.
ReplyDeleteYeah I do agree with the idea for making a PDF file for our halo observers to download. Its a shame the FHON network is extinct that would have been great for the Sivaurinko column halo newsletter.
ReplyDeleteSorry guys, there will be no PDF. These postings must do. Maybe, if there is time, in some distant future we will prepare a paper or two as Jari suggested.
